Generation Citizen (GC) strengthens our community and our nation’s democracy by empowering young people to become advocates for change. Focusing primarily on low-income, minority students, GC changes how civics is taught, equipping middle and high school youth to make their voices heard by teaching them how to take action and make real change. Through an innovative in-class curriculum, students work with local leaders to fix local problems and increase equity in the community.

In addition to our core model – whereby college volunteers (“Democracy Coaches”) co-lead the Common Core State Standards-aligned in-class curriculum over the course of a semester – GC also offers training and Technical Assistance for teacher-led models, notably in communities where GC is otherwise unable to access/serve.

GC is currently projected to serve over 40 different classrooms in 18 different middle and high schools throughout San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley and Richmond.
