Background:
Our vision, beliefs, creed and action plan in Culver City Unified is simple – “Success for All takes Us All.” Additionally, we control, promote and educate with a broad and bold definition of “success:” A successful child is whole – safe, connected, cared for, healthy, challenged, and hopeful. Whole Child, Whole Community is our focus and I will share more details of our strategic approach in the near future. In short, we have strategic community partners (individuals, agencies, business, elected officials, etc.) that provide: food on the weekend for over 100 families (from our own food back on one of our school sites), mentoring at school, mental health services, vision/dental services, wrap around support for homeless families, house our own “Culver Closet” (free clothes, shoes, prom dresses, etc) our free summer lunch provides over 5000 meals and free books, events, activities, games, services every day in the summer), and more.
Short term, here is the request: CCUSD has been working with a colleague from Loyola Marymount University, Darin Early, who shares/embraces the whole child approach to education – and integrates the beliefs, research and proven strategies in his work with future teachers (as well as with the schools he partners with through the Family Schools department he directs). We have a shared goal to host a Whole Child Summit at LMU later this year. We believe that the first step is to identify a core group of leaders/practitioners (from various fields) – those who currently put the whole child tenets into action and have the desire to share their story and encourage others. Once identified, we would host an invite only visioning session to explore the who/what/when and why of a possible Whole Child Summit. I am reaching out to see gauge your interest in participating, as well as ask if you know of others who should be identified. Please let me know your thoughts, interests and ideas.
